Butterfly Count a Success at Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge

Twelve members of the North Jersey chapter of the North American Butterfly Association conducted the fifth annual Fourth of July Butterfly Count at Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge on July 10. These volunteers spotted a new record high 45 butterfly species and counted over 2,500 individuals. New record highs were recorded for 13 species, including black swallowtail, spicebush swallowtail, clouded sulphur, American copper, banded hairstreak, eastern tailed blue, pearl crescent, Appalachian brown, common ringlet, common wood-nymph, northern broken-dash, little glassywing, and Delaware skipper.

New species for the count included common buckeye, hackberry emperor, mulberry wing, wild indigo duskywing, and broad-winged skipper. The rarest species on the count was the Milbert's tortoiseshell.
