Journal Entry   Back KENAI: Refuge Trails Upgraded Alaska Region, July 7, 2004 Print Friendly Version Scott Slavik, a backcountry ranger for Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, reports significant accomplishments in trail upgrades and improvements on many heavily visited Refuge hiking, canoe, and horse trails. All road accessible trails and canoe system portages have been cleared of dead-fall from beetle kill, and improvements have also been made on remote routes near Cottonwood Creek, Surprise Creek, and Lake Emma. Doc Pollard, Hanson, and Funny River Horse trails have also been cleared for the first four miles of each route. Re-routes necessary because of flooding, erosion, or recent fires have been completed on Skyline, Bear Mountain, Kenai River, and Cottonwood Creek Trails. New timber bridges have been placed on several routes, including the popular Seven Lakes Trail, and an improved route from Jim's Landing to the Visitor Contact Station has also been completed. The work, which creates a new standard for Refuge trails, was accomplished with special one-time funding Congress allocated to the Refuge for campgrounds, trails, and cabins. Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has over 200 miles of trails and an estimated 2.5 million visitors each year.
