Fen Study Identifies Sensitive Wetland Areas and Their Recharge Zones in Kane County, Ill.
Midwest Region, July 21, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Kane County Illinois government officials realized that they had some special wetlands called fens remaining in the their county. These fens are dependant upon groundwater and hence need more protection than just preserving the wetland itself. So the county applied for and was awarded a State and Tribal Assistance Grant (STAG) from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5. The study used a Technical Advisory Team to guide its work which included assessment of soils, vegetation, and water chemistry of all known fens in the county. The Chicago ES Field Office participated on this team and provided technical expertise to the study. The results of the study were presented on June 16, 2004 at a Noon Network hosted by the Fox River Ecosystem Partnership, a local stakeholder watershed organization. The results were also presented on July 21, 2004 at the 25th annual conference of the Society of Wetland Scientists in Seattle, Wa. Jeff Mengler of the Chicago Field Office was a co-author on the paper presented in Seattle. The results of the study will also be used by Kane County and the Corps of Engineers Chicago District to better protect the remaining 30 fens in the county.
