Dike Raising at Heinz Refuge Proves Valuable to Local Community As Heavy Rains Pound Area
Northeast Region, July 12, 2004
Print Friendly Version
A partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Tinicum Township, Pa., recently brought reconstruction of a 3,000 foot stretch of dike on the western end of the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. The dike segment was raised to an 8 foot height and widened to 14 feet. The dike, which separates Long Hook Creek from a section of Tinicum Marsh, had low spots that led to occasional breaching during strong storm events. In addition, some portions were narrow, posing access problems for refuge staff.

The last of the work was completed after the July 4th weekend. The new dike proved its worth seven days later, when torrential rain brought severe flooding the area. A rain gauge located at the refuge's Cusano Environmental Education Center recorded just over 8 inches during the storm.

According to Dr. Gary M. Stolz, deputy refuge manager, ?This is a great example of the refuge partnering with the community and the end result benefits both. The improvements to the dike enhance wildlife recreation opportunities for refuge visitors and improve access for refuge staff. Most important, they increase flood control to protect the citizens of Tinicum Township.?

The project cost approximately $70,000 to purchase recycled crushed stone and pay for contract work, equipment rental, and rip-rap. Tinicum Township donated 2,000 cubic yards of fill for the project.
