National Audubon Society designates Santee NWR as an Important Bird Area
Southeast Region, May 15, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Santee NWR Clarendon County, SC, put another feather in its cap when it was recently designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. George Summers, president of the Friends of Santee National Wildlife Refuge, announced the honor to refuge guests at the end of International Migratory Bird Day activities on May 15. To qualify as an IBA, a site must satisfy at least one of several criteria. One of the criteria is that the site should support endangered and/or threatened bird species. Bald eagles, which are nesting on the refuge, and peregrine falcons are two of the endangered species that can be found there. In addition, the refuge provides habitat for wood storks, painted buntings, black rail, yellow rail, and loggerhead shrike, all of which are on the Audubon Watch List, which identifies North American bird species that need help. The refuge also qualified for the IBA designation on the basis of its dense concentrations of waterfowl, vulnerable waterbirds of congregatory behavior, and an ?exceptional number of migratory landbirds.?
