USFWS Plays Big Part in Orland River Day
Northeast Region, June 26, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Fish and Wildlife Service had a major presence at this year's Orland River Day, June 26 in Orland, Maine. The community event celebrates the river and its gifts.

The day started with the Alewife Run, an early morning 3.5-mile paddle along the Narramissic River from Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery into Orland Village. The educational and fun trip followed the route of alewives heading downstream to the sea. Orland has Maine's third largest alewife run.

The paddle was organized and led by Cheri Domina, Maine Fisheries Program Complex outdoor recreation planner, ably assisted by Maine guides Karen Francoeur and Jeff Strout of Castine Kayak. Friends of Craig Brook members also volunteered for this event and were among the 18 hardy souls who attended despite rain showers. Hatchery manager Tom King drove a hatchery truck in the Orland River Day parade later that morning, and outreach personnel and Friends volunteers staffed a booth featuring information on the Orland River watershed (in which Craig Brook is located), its fish and wildlife, the hatchery and Atlantic salmon. Our Enviroscape watershed model was a big hit as well.

The hatchery also played a crucial part in organizing the event, providing help with public relations and a place for the committee to meet.
