Chesapeake Bay Field Office Biologist Participates in International Breeding Waterfowl Survey

Chesapeake Bay Ecological Services Field Office biologist Doug Forsell recently completed one month of participation in the Breeding Waterfowl Surveys in the Adirondack region of New York, southern Ontario and eastern Quebec. Along with pilot Mark Koneff (Washington Office Division of Habitat Conservation) and Tim Jones (Atlantic Coast Joint Venture at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center), he also completed several days of double observer experiments and repeat surveys to help determine delectability and repeatability of the survey data. The surveys provided Forsell with a better understanding of breeding distribution and habitats of birds that winter in the Chesapeake Bay. He was also impressed with the delectability of common loons and, with the help of the Branch of Surveys this fall, he will investigate the possible use of this data for estimating numbers of common loons, a winter resident of the Chesapeake Bay region.
