Genoa National Fish Hatchery Partners to Provide Millions of Fish for Cooperative Management Program
Midwest Region, May 30, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Region 3 National Fish Hatcheries annually produce more than 20 million fish and fish eggs for recovery, restoration, mitigation and conservation activities across the United States. Genoa National Fish Hatchery has historically been one of the largest suppliers of fish eggs, fry and fingerlings (by numbers produced) in the country. Crews at Genoa recently completed their spring distribution efforts for cold, cool and warm water species of fish along with their annual wild fish spawning operations on the Mississippi River and other tributaries. The station shipped over 8.2 million fertilized eggs of walleye, sauger and lake sturgeon to other federal and cooperator agencies to meet fishery management plans in six states. Additionally, the hatchery produced more than 7.2 million fish of nine species to fulfill federal, tribal and state cooperator commitments in ten states and three Native American nations. Programs supported included Lake Sturgeon restoration activities in the Midwest and Southeastern U.S.; Lake Superior Coaster Brook Trout restoration activities; and, host fish production for Endangered Mussel programs. These plus many other stockings mark the beginning of a busy production calendar for hatchery personnel. The station will continue to stock additional fish and mussels throughout the coming months until winters first blasts signal a conclusion to the years efforts. For more information about these activities, or other programs associated with the Genoa National Fish Hatchery contact Roger Gordon or Doug Aloisi at 608-689-605 or e-mail at roger_gordon@fws.gov.
