Stewart County Earth Camp
Southeast Region, June 14, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The twelfth annual Stewart County Earth Camp was held June 14-18, 2004 at Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge with 35 campers enjoying a variety of wildlife related programs and activities. Approximately the same number of volunteers assisted throughout the week, with at least 20 of those on hand on a daily basis. The camp, organized in 1993, and co-sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Dover Kiwanis Club, and the Stewart County Litter Grant Program through TDOT, was designed to foster environmental stewardship among area 4th and 5th graders, an age group targeted by similar environmental education ventures. The camp was supported by many in the community, with this year's donations including tee-shirts by Stewart County Executive David Wallace and the Stewart County Litter Grant Program funded by TDOT, caps donated by Judge Andy Brigham and the Stewart County Juvenile Court, bait provided by Mr. Jeff Hancock and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, cookies and chips by Subway, video production fee and photos by Ms. Daphne Sewing and the U.S. Forest Service, photos by Ms. Linda Green and Ms. Kathleen Chute and snacks by Piggly Wiggly and McIntosh IGA. Mr. Billy Clay Cherry, local videographer, produced a video for future promotion of camp.

Programs presented by a host of knowledgeable resource professionals were Forestry, Frog Melodies, Water Safety, Waste Reduction, Canoeing, Snakes, Raptors, Early Hunting Weapons, Water Quality, Rare Scare, Creek Critters, Fish of Tennessee, Orienteering, Turkeys, Flower Power Pot, Fishing and The Search is On. Campers, who were divided into four groups; Cardinals, Hummingbirds, Goldfinches and Bluebirds, rotated among four programs per day with every camper having the opportunity to participate. Many of the campers were exposed to subjects that were new and exciting to them, as was and is always the case in the Snake program presented by Dr. Jim Byford, professor at the University of Tennessee at Martin. After this program, the children left with a much better appreciation and respect for the much misunderstood creatures. This exemplifies the primary purpose for the camp; to help these future environmental leaders learn more about and learn how to care for our precious natural resources, from the smallest creature to the tallest tree. The camp was organized and directed successfully again this year by a Steering Committee made up of a group of dedicated volunteers and agency staff who began planning for camp in March. Members included Ms. Gayle Boone, Ms. Ann Stapp, Ms. Debbie Austin (NPS), Ms. Daphne Sewing (USFS), Mr. Joe Campbell (TWRA), Mr. Jeff Hancock (COE), Ms. Linda Green (FWS) and Chair, Ms. Sarah Welker (FWS). In addition to the volunteer's and presenter's time, thanks also go to the Cross Creeks Refuge staff for their hard work and assistance, Fort Donelson National Battlefield staff for mowing prior to camp and for the use of their YCC crew, U.S. Forest Service for use of canoes and life jackets, First Responders for medical assistance, Stewart County Board of Education for snacks, Mr. Dan Dill and Dover Kiwanis, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Officers Mr. Donnie Dill and Mr. Greg Smith, Stewart County Public Library for use of meeting room, and of course all of the parents who registered and brought their children. Donations for the children's goodie bags were made by a number of national, state and local organizations, and thank you's go out to them as well.
