KENAI: Cooperative Moose Research Gets a Boost
Alaska Region, June 18, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Regional Director Rowan Gould signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) on June 18, 2004, which establishes a joint effort to support research, education, and outreach efforts of the Kenai Moose Research Center. Commissioner Kevin Duffy signed the document for the State agency. The Moose Research Center, located within Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, consists of four square miles of pens, laboratory facilities, cabins, and other facilities to aid primarily in studies of moose; however, research work is also performed on caribou at the site. This agreement cements a long-term relationship between the Refuge and ADF&G in moose research in the area. Joint efforts later this summer will result in critical maintenance on the fenced enclosures to reduce loss of moose calves to bears and wolves.
