Take Me Fishing Day Is Celebrated at Erie National Widlife Refuge
Northeast Region, May 29, 2004
Print Friendly Version

Link to Northeast Region, USFWS; map of regionThe third annual Take Me Fishing event at the Erie National Wildlife Refuge kicked off at 9:00 a.m. on May 29th at the refuge's visitor contact station. The event was carried out in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's SMART Angler program, which focuses on fishing ethics and safety. Once they were instructed in safety, manners, proper fishing techniques and more, approximately 60 children had the opportunity to perfect their casting skills. They then participated in an accurate casting contest and prizes were awarded. The refuge pool at which the children fished for the rest of the event was prepared with rigged poles, mini tackle boxes and bait at six separate stations.

Many children caught fish, including some monster catfish that had been stocked previously. The children and adult volunteers alike had a great time and were especially excited when it came time for the many contests and giveaways. Prizes were awarded to participants who could answer questions relating to the SMART Angler program, and a grand prize was awarded to the SMARTest Angler who exemplified the ethical standards set by the SMART Angler program. Every child walked away with a goody bag filled with information on fishing, the National Wildlife Refuge System and the refuge system centennial, as well as many centennial-related items (key chains, suntan lotion, etc.) Many adult volunteers who helped during the event were also recognized and dozens of pictures taken at the event are presently on display at the refuge headquarters.

This event is one of several that promote the refuge and coordinate with other land use resource agencies in celebrating the National Wildlife Refuge System and the many wildlife-related public use opportunities on refuge system lands.
