Dakota Skipper Management and Conservation Guidelines Available
Midwest Region, January 31, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Dakota skipper (Hesperia dacotae) is a rare butterfly that inhabits high-quality prairie remnants in Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota and nearby Canada. Since 2002 it has been listed as an official candidate for listing as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The persistence of Dakota skipper's native prairie habitat depends on disturbance, such as fire, grazing, and mowing. Any of these disturbances, however, may also lead to the butterfly's demise due to the extreme fragmentation of its habitat. This sensitivity, coupled with the necessity to actively manage native prairie remnants for conservation, presented a need to provide land managers and private landowners with management guidelines that would allow for the conservation of Dakota skipper. The Twin Cities Field Office reviewed the scientific literature and consulted with prairie butterfly experts to draft Dakota Skipper Conservation Guidelines, which are now available on the internet (http://midwest.fws.gov/endangered/insects/dask-cons-guid.pdf).
