AK PENINSULA: Exciting Bird News

In April, at least four trumpeter swans were identified at Rapids Camp on the Naknek River; the first time trumpeter swans have been identified in this area. One of the swans was collared and later identified to be from Washington State. Three collared tundra swans, known breeders for this area, were seen as well. One of the collared tundra swans was later identified to be from Long Point Ontario, Canada. Biologists are still working on identifying the other two and collecting data from all observers to be sent to the biologists that originally collared the birds.

Pacific golden plovers, formerly suspected breeders, are now confirmed breeders with two nests found near Naknek, eight nests found at Port Heiden, and two nests found near the King Salmon River. Black bellied plovers, formerly considered migrants in this area, are now confirmed breeders as well. Oscar W. Johnson, from the University of Montana, found a nest at Port Heiden. This represents an expansion of the known breeding range for both plover species. This is a significant discovery!
