Alaska Outreach Coordinator Receives the Service's Highest Honor

Outreach Coordinator Cathy Rezabeck Recognized for Superior Service -- Cathy Rezabeck, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Alaska Region's Outreach Coordinator, was recognized for superior service in a ceremony before her peers on June 8, 2004. Assistant Regional Director Karen Boylan presented Cathy with the Service's ?Superior Service? award, signed by Service Director Steve Williams. Cathy's notable accomplishments include creating, organizing and coordinating major public refuge events for Refuge Week and the National Wildlife Refuge System's Centennial, which was celebrated across the nation during 2003. Among her many successful projects, Cathy persuaded nationally-known radio personality Tom Bodett and Grammy-nominated musician Will Ackerman to make a series of public service announcements for the Centennial. While the initial focus was to be for Alaska audiences, Tom and Will became so interested in the project that they made a series of PSAs for the entire agency, which have been aired across the nation since the week of March 14, 2003. Cathy has organized the Alaska Native-oriented Waterfowl Calendar and contest every year since 1998. Last year, students in 56 villages adjacent to 7 refuges produced 2000 art and literature entries, and winning entries were used in the calendar. Nearly 18,000 copies are distributed each year to families living in villages in rural Alaska.

Cathy also organized and supervised the Regional Outreach Team, which determined Refuge station needs, and facilitated a multi-program week-long workshop to help advance those needs, many of which were Refuge related. Cathy provided outreach training for Project Leaders, visited Refuge stations to develop outreach plans, and established and trained outreach contacts at each Refuge. She created an internal web site for Fish and Wildlife Service employees, on how to plan and carry out public information and outreach activities, and arranged contracts for live ?re-enactor? performances by Rachel Carson and Teddy Roosevelt.

The Fish and Wildlife Service's Superior Service Award is an honor award established in 1971 to recognize significant acts, services, or achievements that materially aid or effect the successful accomplishment of the Service's and/or the Department's mission. It is the highest honor given by the Director of the Fish and Wildlife Service.
