Tribal Natural Resource Issues Are Topic of Northeast Native American Liaison Speech
Northeast Region, April 29, 2004
Print Friendly Version
On April 29, Northeast Region Native American Liaison D.J. Monette spoke to a class on Ecosystem Management at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. The topic of his presentation was the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's federal Indian trust responsibility and how the Service works with tribes on natural resource issues. Monette discussed perspectives he has gained while working closely with Native American tribes on current environmental, legal, and political issues.

The students gained a better understanding of the U.S. Department of Interior's federal Indian trust responsibility. They learned about treaties, executive orders, and agency policy that ultimately drive interactions between the tribes and the Service on a government-to-government basis. Monette's talk covered relationships regarding both tribal and federal land.

About 42 students attended the senior-level class.
