KENAI: Salmon Fry Approved for a Final Release on Refuge
Alaska Region, May 17, 2004
Print Friendly Version
A Special Use Permit was issued on May 17, 2004, by Kenai National Wildlife Refuge to release up to six million sockeye salmon fry into a tributary to a wilderness lake on the Refuge. The permit was a negotiated result of a long-standing lawsuit and assured that the salmon could be released rather than being destroyed at the hatchery. Timely action by the District Court of Alaska on a joint motion filed by the plaintiffs and defendant in the case resulted in the resolution. Additional egg take and release of young salmon, however, will not be permitted.
