KENAI: Kenai Refuge Boat Landing and Riverbank Restored
Alaska Region, May 19, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Jim's Landing, a boat launch site used by tens of thousands of anglers and boaters annually, had the final work accomplished recently, assuring riverbank protection and public access long into the future at this important Kenai River access point. Fall floods in 2002 washed out much of the riverbank and threatened the entrance road to the boat launch. Through a Challenge Cost Share grant partnership, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge initiated timely repairs and long-term protective measures using buried rootwads and other organic matter, covered with vegetated mats, and new plantings. The Kenai River Sportfishing Association contributed $150,000 to the project and the Alaska Flyfishers Association contributed labor. Spruce trees cabled to the riverbank in recent weeks, to reduce erosional forces of the River, have completed the project
