Oregon Islands NWR celebrates International Migratory Bird Day 2004
Pacific Region, May 8, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Complex and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will cosponsor the 2004 celebration of International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) on May 8th at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (YHONA) in Newport, Oregon. Yaquina Head is cooperatively managed through a Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, BLM, and the U.S. Coast Guard which maintains the historic Yaquina Head Lighthouse on the site. BLM administers the headland and Interpretive Center at YHONA, and the rocks and islands immediately offshore from the headland are part of Oregon Islands NWR and Wilderness Area. YHONA is located approximately 3 miles north of downtown Newport.

Refuge and BLM staff will be at the Interpretive Center from 10a.m. to 3p.m. to offer a host of bird-related activities. As part of the day's activities, spotting scopes will be set up to help visitors view and learn about seabirds and other migratory birds that use coastal habitat. The headland and the adjacent rocks and islands at Yaquina Head are used by a multitude of colonial nesting seabirds, including Brandt's cormorant, pelagic cormorant, pigeon guillemot, western gull, black oystercatcher, and over 55,000 common murres, providing one of the best seabird viewing areas in the country. Brochures, activity books, posters and other literature highlighting migratory birds will be available. Kids will be able to participate in a life-sized board game called ?the Migration Game?, and compete in a coloring contest. Shade-grown coffee, which helps protect habitat for migratory birds, will be available to sample. A vehicle fee of $5.00 (valid for 3 consecutive days) is required at the YHONA entrance station. Free entry is given to all walk-in and bike-in visitors.

International Migratory Bird Day is an event that is observed annually throughout the Western Hemisphere. This event centers on a valuable resource - the nearly 350 species of migratory birds that travel between nesting habitats in North America and non-breeding grounds in South and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the southern U.S. IMBD events celebrate the annual return of millions of birds and emphasize that the continued enjoyment of these birds depends upon our actions as consumers, homeowners, and citizens.
