Volunteer Work Day a Success at Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge
Midwest Region, April 17, 2004
Print Friendly Version
On April 17, 2004, 14 volunteers assembled to remove an old barbed wire fence at Wallkill River NWR. This project was an essential first step toward removal of a hedgerow in an 82-acre grassland complex. Hedgerow removal will yield improved habitat for breeding grassland birds by increasing field size. On April 17, 14 volunteers assembled to remove an old barbed wire fence at Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge. This project was an essential first step toward removal of a hedgerow in an 82-acre grassland complex. Hedgerow removal will yield improved habitat for breeding grassland birds by increasing field size, which is the most important characteristic in site selection for breeding grassland birds. Grassland birds have suffered the most long term, widespread, and precipitous decline of any group of North American birds over the past forty years. Consequently, most grassland birds appear on lists of species of conservation priority. The Wallkill Valley is a stronghold for grassland birds in New Jersey. Listed species that use this refuge grassland include Henslow's sparrow, grasshopper sparrow, savannah sparrow and bobolink. Volunteers expressed satisfaction in knowing they contributed toward the conservation of refuge wildlife and suggested that work days become a regularly scheduled event.
