Eagan Wildfire Threatens Minnesota Valley NWR
Midwest Region, April 19, 2004
Print Friendly Version
At approximately 6:30 pm on April 14 a wildfire was ignited along a stretch of railroad tracks adjacent to a portion of Fort Snelling State Park in Eagan, Minn. With the current winds and drought-like conditions, the fire grew rapidly in size and made major runs towards the Minnesota River bottoms.

Resources from Eagan and Apple Valley Fire Departments, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service responded to the fire during the first hours of initial attack. The fire quickly grew to more than 1,000 acres in size throughout the evening and early morning hours while firefighters sought to control the fire. By the morning of April 15 the fire had completed its major runs, but potential for spotting and re-burn was of concern due to forecasted Red Flag Warnings for that day.

Fire management staff ordered extra resources from several refuges and wetland managements districts in anticipation of potential holding problems on the 15th. The fire was controlled throughout the weekend and by a combination of mop-up and favorable weather the fire was contained on the evening of April 18. Resources that assisted with the suppression efforts included one type six engine from Crab Orchard NWR, one type six engine and one marshmaster from Litchfield WMD, one type six engine and one marshmaster from Seney NWR, one type six and two type seven engines from Minnesota Valley NWR. Overhead positions filled by USFWS employees included one ICT3 (Incident Commander Type 3), one DIVS (Division Supervisor) and one STEN-T (Strike Team Leader-trainee). In addition to keeping the wildfire off of the Minnesota Valley NWR, no injuries occurred and no structures where lost during the suppression efforts.
