A Howling Good Time At Sullivan Creek NFH
Midwest Region, April 16, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Starting in November 2003 and running to the end of March 2004, Fisheries Biological Science Technician James Anderson of Sullivan Creek NFH was part of a Michigan wolf survey, conducted by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Division. The survey is part of the State of Michigan's attempt to get a firm count on the number of wolves in the Upper Peninsula.

Sullivan Creek NFH was made aware of the survey when Christie Deloria, USFWS Ecological Services ? East Lansing Field Office, who is currently stationed out of the Marquette Biological Station, was helping out with the spawning of lake trout broodstock at Sullivan Creek NFH last October. Deloria indicated that Sullivan Creek NFH would be a great place to gather wolf information due to its remote location in the middle of the Hiawatha National Forest. A few phone calls were made between Crystal LeGault, Assistant Manager of Pendills Creek & Sullivan Creek NFH's; Deloria; and the State of Michigan to coordinate the idea. Within two weeks, a packet of maps and information was received indicating that Sullivan Creek would be participating in the 2003-2004 wolf survey.

During the five-month survey, Anderson collected information such as tracks, scat and sightings after work hours to complete the data collection. Anderson used 4x4 truck, snowmobile and snowshoes to gather the wolf information. Once the data was collected, forms were filled out with points plotted on maps to show location of activity. During the survey, Anderson did make visual contact with a wolf in early November 2003, which was a definite hair-raising experience.
