Shorebird Sister Schools Program at Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex
Pacific Region, April 16, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Refuge Operations Specialist Dawn Grafe and Americorps member Sue Peters of the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex worked extensively with Oregon coast students and teachers in the Shorebird Sister Schools Program during February. The Shorebird Sister Schools Program (SSSP) is an Internet-based environmental education program that connects students, educators, biologists, and birding enthusiasts along migratory flyways. Students begin by learning about shorebirds in the classroom through various multi-disciplinary activities. They then add to their new-found knowledge on field trips which include activities such as the "Migration Game", "Bird Behavior Bingo", "Cast a Track", and basic birdwatching and identification. Students at Yaquina View Elementary in Newport, Ocean Crest Elementary in Bandon, and Neskowin Valley School in Neskowin participated in classroom sessions in February. In one activity students learned the value of wetlands as habitat through the use of metaphors. Students also drew from their artistic talent to make collages depicting what shorebirds need for migration. In a life-sized board game, students played the role of birds migrating between breeding and non-breeding habitat, and discovered just how difficult migration can be for shorebirds. The Shorebird Sister Schools Program at these schools continued in March with three more classroom visits. The year's program will culminate in April with spring migration field trips to refuge wetlands. (For more information about the program, visit http://sssp.fws.gov)
