Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge Uses Prescribed Fire to Manage Grasslands
Midwest Region, April 7, 2004
Print Friendly Version
On April 7, staff at Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge teamed with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service to complete a prescribed burn of a 25-acre grassland. The fire will suppress invading shrubs and forbs while restoring vigor to native warm season grasses.

This field is part of an 82-acre grassland complex that provides nesting habitat for several declining grassland birds, including bobolink, grasshopper sparrow, and Henslow's sparrow. Further, the fire reduced hazardous fuels in an area of mixed wildland and urban property.
