Region 3 SCEP Graduate Returns to Alma Mater
Midwest Region, January 22, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Region 3 Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) student Dave Murcia recently graduated Cum Laude from St. Ambrose University (SAU) in Davenport, Iowa. He started his student career with the Service in 2000 as a STEP at what was then known as the Wapello District of the Mark Twain Complex (now Port Louisa NWR). Once converted to a SCEP student, he was involved in refuge management practices such as fire management, biological programs, prairie and wetland restoration, moist soil management, visitor services, and private lands.

As a successful graduate of SAU as well as the SCEP, he was approached by Sarah Vortriede, Ph.D., to give a lecture in her Career Orientation in the Biological Sciences course at his alma mater. The course is a required course for biology majors at SAU and is a survey of careers in the sciences, particularly biological sciences and allied health science professions, to introduce career decisions, opportunities, and development. Dave was able to reach and share his experience with those students interested in the mission of the Service and in particular, introduce the SCEP as an opportunity for selection, with requirements and career goals. His January visit ended at the Career Center of SAU that offers career and job counseling assistance and interest inventories to support students and alumni in making career choices and setting achievable goals for employment. Currently Dave is on a developmental detail at the Rock Island Ecological Services Field Office and has been exposed to responsibilities involving threatened and endangered species, habitat conservation, and environmental contaminants. His anticipated conversion to refuges in Region 3 is pending for this spring.
