Fishery Biologists Involve Public in Efforts to Improve Fish Passage in Kishwaukee River Watershed
Midwest Region, January 15, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Fishery Biologist Nate Caswell from Carterville Fishery Resources Office joined members of other state and federal resource agencies Jan. 15,in Belvidere, Ill., to solicit input from the public on a proposed project to improve fish passage in the Kishwaukee River watershed. Personnel from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Kishwaukee River Ecosystem Partnership, the USFWS Ecological Services Rock Island Field Office, and the City of Belvidere coordinated the meeting in Belvidere, IL to solicit community opinion and feedback on a proposed project to improve fish passage at the Belvidere Dam. Biologists and engineers took time to introduce the community to a variety of options for alteration or removal of the Belvidere Dam. The meeting also provided an opportunity for the community members to ask questions and voice their concerns regarding the proposed project. If fish passage were improved at the Belvidere Dam, several hundred miles of high quality stream habitat would be opened up. Community members understood the potential of this project, and seemed to be generally in favor of a project improving fish passage at the Belvidere Dam.
