Ho-Chunk Nation Conducts Annual Bison Roundup
Midwest Region, December 8, 2003
Print Friendly Version
The Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin conducted its Annual Bison Roundup on December 8, 2003 north of Madison, WI. Over 50 volunteers joined the Ho-Chunk tribal members to mark, vaccinate and collect data on over 200 bison. A licensed veterinarian administered vaccines and medication as each animal was weighed, marked and sorted. The tribal bison herd increased this fall with the addition of 90 head obtained from the National Park Service herd at Yellowstone National Park. Arrangements were made through the ITBC (Inter tribal Bison Cooperative)of which Ho-Chunk is a member. Transfer of the animals was necessary since a drought in the west reduced the range forage and grasses required to winter the animals. Employees from the Department of Agriculture, joined private land owners, other cattle ranchers, and community volunteers to herd and guide the bison through the process. The roundup began with site preparation at 5 a.m. and processing of animals commencing about 7:30 am. Volunteers were provide with hot coffee, chili, juice and cakes on site. Work continued until 5:30 p.m. when the workgroup was invited to the farm house for a heathy helping of meaty stew and good fellowship. All activities were onsite with the exception of a one hour meeting of the Wisconsin Tribal Conservation Advisory Council that I attended at the invitation of the Ho-Chunk Natural Resources Director, Ritchie Brown.
