Rydell NWR Host 8th Annual Hunt for Hunters With Disabilities
Midwest Region, October 24, 2003
Print Friendly Version
Rydell National Wildlife Refuge conducted its eighth annual Deer Hunt for People with Disabilities October 17-19, 2003.The Hunt was coordinated through Options-Interstate Resource Center for Independent Living in East Grand Forks, Minn., who generated funds, volunteers and provided meals and daily door prizes for hunters.

Nineteen hunters from North Dakota and Minnesota participated in the three-day hunt. Specialized accessible equipment, such as portable hunting blinds, wheelchair accessible platforms, temporary screens, adaptive hunting equipment, as well as the accessible trail system and Visitor's Center, facilitated a safe and effective hunting environment on the refuge.

All hunters were provided with portable radios by the Friends of Rydell Refuge Association, in order to contact the base station at the Visitor's Center if there was a need for assistance or a deer was taken. Volunteers were on hand at all times to provide assistance to the hunters, transporting hunters to and from pre-determined hunting sites, retrieving and cleaning deer, and providing camaraderie and moral support throughout the weekend. Detroit Lakes WMD Conservation Officer Brent Taylor and trainee Darryn Witt answered law enforcement questions, while Refuge Operations Specialist Juancarlos Giese and Administrative Technician Becky Ekstein were on hand representing Rydell NWR, providing support for all aspects of the Hunt.

Disabled persons, including the elderly, blind and people confined to wheelchairs, got the opportunity to hunt. All hunters saw deer, with eleven hunters taking a deer. Everyone left with fond memories of an exciting Hunt at Rydell National Wildlife Refuge.
