Jail Inmates 1992

This annual BJS Bulletin reported that at mid-1992, local jails held nearly 445,000 inmates, or about 1 in every 428 adult U.S. residents. The largest jail jurisdictions held 81% of the total inmate population. From these jurisdictions, the Annual Survey of Jails for the first time in its history collected information about drug testing, about programs that treat or educate inmates, and about boot camps, work release, and alternatives to incarceration such as electronic monitoring, house arrest, community service, and weekend or day reporting. 8/93 NCJ 143284
