Test Methods and Guidelines
OPPTS Harmonized Test Guidelines
The Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances (OPPTS) has issued harmonized test guidelines that recommend testing procedures for pesticides and toxic substances and the development of test data submitted to the Agency for review under the:
- Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA),
- Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), and
- Section 408 of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic (FFDCA).

Environmental Test Methods and Guidelines Used at EPA: EPA’s Forum on Environmental Measurements maintains a Web site for the environmental analytical community that serves as a collection of test methods used by the various EPA program offices. Test methods are approved procedures for measuring the presence and concentration of physical and chemical pollutants; evaluating properties, such as toxic properties, of chemical substances; or measuring the effects of substances under various conditions.
Environmental Modeling at EPA: EPA uses a wide variety of computational models to support the scientific analyses that inform our decisions and policies. These models increase the level of understanding about natural systems and the way in which they react to varying conditions, including the spread of toxic substances in various media, the short- and long-term effects of exposure to hazardous substances, and other forms of prediction and risk assessment.
