The Detroit Entrepreneurship Institute (DEI) is a nationally celebrated SBA Women’s Business Center, which is 501(c) 3 nonprofit that has empowered people and communities since 1990.  Cathy McClelland, President and CEO stated, “The Institute’s nearly 19 years of work has been built on the belief that Detroit’s statistics relative to poverty will not change significantly until we begin to shift our focus and efforts to one of economic empowerment, asset accumulation, financial literacy and small business ownership.” The Institute currently operates under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration and Detroit Planning and Development Department.

The Detroit Entrepreneurship Institute, a “presidential award winning organization”, received four awards during the year 2008 for the outstanding work it has done and continues to do.

DEI’s programs and services, which consist of entrepreneurship training and technical assistance, encourage economic empowerment and self-sufficiency by providing business development programs designed to bring traditionally low-income populations and those with barriers into the economic mainstream; providing programs that encourage small business development, micro-enterprise, commercial revitalization and job creation.

The Detroit Entrepreneurship Institute is a licensed Michigan Proprietary School and operates various programs designed to help businesses succeed.
