  The Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems Grant Program (SLDS) hosted its third Annual Fall Grantee Meeting on November 13-14, 2008, in Arlington, VA. The Meeting served as a forum for dialogue, collaboration, and the sharing of best practices, providing the opportunity for more than 70 representatives from the twenty seven FY2006 and FY2007 grantee states to share solutions and ideas with one another and to take home information on topics they identified as critical to their projects in the upcoming year.

  On July 27, 2007, in Washington, DC, recipients of the IES Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems Grant Program from FY 2006 and FY 2007 met together for the first time. Representatives from Kansas, Florida, and Michigan facilitated a discussion that included grantee states and guest researchers and addressed the topic of longitudinal analyses and stakeholder information needs. In the second part of the meeting, representatives from Indiana, Wisconsin, and Ohio facilitated a discussion focused on states' approaches to data security, access, and authentication.

• July 26: SLDS New Grantee Kick-Off Meeting, Washington, DC

  On July 26, 2007, in Washington, DC, the FY 2007 recipients of the IES Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems Grant Program met for a Kick-Off Meeting. This meeting gave staff members from the new grantee states-Arizona, Colorado, District of Columbia, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oregon, Utah, and Virginia-the opportunity to meet one another, learn about available resources, and hear lessons learned from three FY 2006 grantee states (Wisconsin, Tennessee, Florida).

  On March 1, 2007, the Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems Grantee States met in Atlanta, Georgia, to discuss ways in which they may collaborate with one another, leverage best practices, and share lessons learned. To this end, Florida hosted a presentation on intrastate and interstate transcript exchange systems, and Wisconsin led the discussion on how a special interest group (SIG) could serve as a strategy for sharing LDS designs, reports, and analytics-to avoid "re-inventing the wheel."

  The fourteen FY 2006 IES Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems Grantee States convened for a second time on July 26, 2006 in Washington, DC. This meeting allowed the grantee states the opportunity to touch base on the six-month progress of their grants and featured an overview on project management as well as project development highlights from Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina. This time also gave grantee states the opportunity to voice their suggestions for the features matrix and for topics to address at future meetings.

• July 5–7: SLDS grantee, South Carolina, co-sponsored an SLDS grantee discussion session at the NECC Conference in San Diego, CA.
   
• February 21: SLDS Grantee Kick-Off Meeting, Orlando, FL

  On February 21, 2006 the FY 2006 recipients of the newly awarded IES Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems Grant Program met in Orlando, FL for a Kick-Off Meeting. This meeting gave staff members from the fourteen grantee states—Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wisconsin—the opportunity to meet one another as well as the SLDS Grant Program Officer, Kashka Kubzdela. Each state was able to discuss the current status of its statewide data system, where the state was headed in this respect, and what obstacles it would likely encounter along the way. Discussion topics included: Data Security; Staff Professional Development; Data Models; Data Quality; Linking Student Databases (either within K-12, or to other agencies); Vertical Reporting; Unique Student Identifiers (Design and Implementation); Data Dictionary/Metadata; Data Warehouses and Decision Support Tools; Automated Transcripts; Highly Qualified Teacher Reporting Capacity; Sustained Funding; Data Services to Districts; and Designing Core Elements with local stakeholders.
