NAEP Data Available for Secondary Analysis

Most NAEP data from 1990 to date are now available online in the NAEP Data Explorer. Data from the 1990 reading and science assessments, as well as the 1992 writing assessment are not available in the online tool because they were not part of the current frameworks.

In addition to the online tool, there are other NAEP data products available for use in conducting more detailed analyses of NAEP data. The variables used in each assessment can be located by NAEP ID. The listed micro-data, (i.e., respondent-level data, including weights) from 1990 are available on CD-ROM for restricted use. Use of these data requires a license from NCES.

NAEP results in tabular format from 1992 to 1996 are available on CD-ROM for public use.

Restricted-Use Data

Micro-level NAEP data in raw format are available for the purpose of secondary analysis only after your organization applies for and receives a restricted-use data license from NCES. The license is intended to protect the confidentiality of individual students and schools. These restricted-use data are available beginning with the 1990 assessment. Files listing the variables available for each year may be downloaded in Excel and text (CSV) format.

Public-Use Data

NAEP results and background variables are available for examination by the public in easy-to-use tabular format on CD-ROM, providing flexibility to researchers in conducting secondary analysis. Users can customize and generate tables according to their interests. These public-use data offer a snapshot of student achievement related to a specific assessment or assessment year; however, they do not provide complete student or school level data. Individual student, teacher, or school responses are not available, but users can view cross-tabulations of overall group results for NAEP questionnaire items.

An additional source for public-use data is the NAEP Data Explorer. Results from national (public and private school) and state (public school) NAEP assessments since 1990 can be viewed by grade and subject assessed. NAEP scores may be cross-tabulated with student, school, and teacher factors. Data for the 1997 Arts assessment are available online only in PDF format.

Data Prior to 1990

Some sets of NAEP data from 1970 to 1980 (note: select the NAEP link under "IV. Education Assessment") are available online in the form of "Booklet" files from the University of Michigan International Archive of Education (IAED) website. Data may be downloaded after review and agreement to IAED's terms for downloading and using the data.

Results from the 1984, 1986, and 1988 assessments are currently available on data tapes for public use from the Educational Testing Service. These results may be put onto CD-ROM in the near future. Please contact Taslima Rahman, (202) 502-7316, to obtain more information.

Note that none of these data and the data in the NAEP Data Tool are from assessments that did not use the same frameworks.
