Atlanta EDA Economic Development Symposium a Success; Register Now for the September 26 Symposium in Kansas City

On June 14, EDA, in partnership with its Atlanta regional office, the International Economic Development Council and the National Association of Regional Councils, hosted an Economic Development Symposium in Atlanta.

The theme of the event was "Disasters and Economic Dislocations: Building a Disaster-Resistant Economy." The fourth in a five-part series, the conference brought together public and private sector representatives together who have faced, or are preparing for, severe economic dislocations and found ways to build a stronger and safer economy.

Over 200 attendees heard keynote presentations by The Honorable Michael J. Olivier, Secretary of the Louisiana Economic Development Department, and Susan Story, President and CEO, Gulf Power Company. Other sessions focused on private sector strategies for working with local governments in disaster recovery; planning for severe pandemics; building a stronger and safer economy through collaborations, partnerships and coalitions; and addressing risk management issues facing business and the economy.

The event also included a Town Hall meeting with EDA leadership. U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Sandy K. Baruah and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Benjamin Erulkar took questions from the audience on topics related to EDA's policies and programs.

Each symposium in the 2007 EDA series focuses on strategies, policies and best practices to create jobs and economic opportunity. Speakers include regional and national leaders from the private and public sectors. Only one symposium remains!

  • Wednesday, September 26, a joint symposium by Denver and Chicago Regions in Kansas City, Mo., on Entrepreneurship.

Visit the Symposia Web site for additional information regarding venues, program and online registration.

The EDA Regional Symposia have been approved for recertification credits for those possessing the CEcD designation.
