The Office of Child Labor, Forced Labor, and Human Trafficking (OCFT) held its
2009 Grantee Workshop from April 20 - 23, 2009 in Washington, D.C. On April 22,
Secretary of Labor Solis joined the group for a special session commemorating
the upcoming World Day Against Child Labor, "Give Girls a Chance: End Child
Labor." In the spirit of that theme, the session highlighted some of the
strategies used by USDOL-funded child labor elimination projects to remove girls from
exploitive labor and provide them with educational opportunities. Secretary
Solis engaged in a discussion with representatives from three grantee
organizations implementing projects in the Dominican Republic, Morocco, and
Uganda to remove girls from some of the worst forms of child labor such as child
domestic service and commercial sexual exploitation. They talked about how the
projects have transformed the lives of these girls and how they have worked to raise awareness and build the capacity of national governments
to effectively address child labor.
OCFT's 2009 grantees workshop, entitled "A World Without Child Labor: Dream,
Design, Deliver" included approximately 100 participants from 31 countries
representing 35 USDOL-funded child labor elimination projects. The workshop
reviewed OCFT reporting and policy guidelines and created a forum to share
practical strategies, ideas, and lessons learned. Topics included innovative
strategies for service delivery, performance monitoring, and increasing educational
quality and access for children in need.
