Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will hold a teleconference at 2:15 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 to discuss additional federal funding for the Healthy Lands Initiative proposed by President Bush in his fiscal year 2008 budget.
The initiative would expand cooperative conservation efforts with local communities, companies and conservation groups to help restore more than 400,000 acres of working landscapes in the West that host world-class wildlife habitat and energy resources.
The initiative focuses on projects in six areas facing the greatest challenges in managing natural resources to maintain multiple use: Southwest Wyoming; northwest and southeast portions of New Mexico; Utah; the three-corner area of Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada; south-central Idaho; and southwestern Colorado. Five of these areas contain the largest onshore reserves of natural gas in the country.
