Secretary Salazar, Senator Durbin Commemorate 200th Anniversary
of Abraham Lincoln's Birth with Ceremony at Lincoln Memorial

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln at a ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009. The commemoration is an annual event, required by an act of Congress, that dates back to the Memorial's dedication in 1922.

Other participants included Harold Holzer, co-chair, Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission; Honorable Scott Stuckey, Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Services; Honorable Frank Williams, Chief Justice, Rhode Island Supreme Court; Michael Feinstein, singer and pianist; and Nikki Giovanni, poet. The ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of the 16th president.
