A new ENERGY STAR specification for commercial refrigerators and freezers becomes effective January 1, 2010. On average, ENERGY STAR qualified products covered under this new specification will be over 30 percent more energy-efficient than standard options.

New to this specification are glass door models. As of April 1, 2009 glass and mixed glass/solid door cabinets are eligible to qualify immediately using the V2.0 ENERGY STAR specification PDF (200KB).

Since solid door cabinets were eligible to qualify under V1.0, for the next nine months manufacturers of this class of products can continue to qualify their models using the V1.0 specification PDF (56KB).

However, starting in January 1, 2010, all models (solid, glass and mixed doors) must meet the requirements of V2.0 ENERGY STAR specification.

What can ENERGY STAR labeled commercial refrigerators and freezers save me?

ENERGY STAR labeled commercial refrigerators and freezers are more energy efficient because they are designed with components such as ECM evaporator and condenser fan motors, hot gas anti-sweat heaters, or high-efficiency compressors, which will significantly reduce energy consumption and utility bills. Compared to standard models, ENERGY STAR labeled commercial refrigerators and freezers can lead to energy savings of as much as 35% with a 1.3 year payback. By buying commercial refrigerators and freezers, purchasers can expect to save $170 annually per refrigerator and $120 per freezer. Replacing all existing commercial refrigerators and freezers in the US with ENERGY STAR labeled models would result in savings of almost $250 million per year, or roughly 25% of the energy consumed by models currently on the market — the equivalent of eliminating the emissions from 475,000 cars.
