Update: 2000-2001 FAFSA Distribution

Dear Partners:

As you know, the first 100,000 FAFSAs that SFA shipped to 61 schools contained IRS
TeleFile line reference errors. Fast action by our partners warned us, and we immediately stopped further shipments and began retrieving all of the forms with the errors. In some cases we were able to turn the delivery trucks around before they reached the schools; in all others cases we contacted the schools that had received the forms and made arrangements to get them back. To date we have recovered approximately 86,000 of the 100,000 forms that were shipped out.

When we corrected the IRS line references, we also established a new P.O. box for these forms and changed the address on the FAFSA envelope (and elsewhere on the form) accordingly. This gives us a way to capture an
y potentially incorrect FAFSAs that are submitted, and we will establish special handling procedures for these forms to ensure that they are processed within the standard time frame.

Some schools have asked how to tell if a FAFSA
may be incorrect. The easiest way to do that is to check the P.O. Box number on the envelope bound into the form. If the P.O. Box is 4015, the FAFSA is fine. (The incorrect FAFSAs have P.O. Box 4001 printed on the envelope.)

Again, we want to thank our partners, whose quick actions let us nip this problem in the bud, and the schools that actually had received the incorrect forms. Their cooperation has allowed us to retrieve most of the forms that contain the incorrect references.
