Recovery Act Limited Competition: Core Centers for Enhancing Research Capacity In U.S. Academic Institutions (P30)

This funding announcement (RFA-OD-09-005) is supported by the NIH under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“Recovery Act” or “ARRA”), designed to provide the necessary resources for U.S. academic institutions to enhance their biomedical research efforts through the development of Biomedical Research Core Centers. These cores are designed to provide scientific and programmatic support for promising investigators and areas of research, including funds to hire, provide appropriate start-up packages, and develop pilot research projects for newly independent investigators, with the goal of augmenting and expanding the institution’s research efforts.

NIDCD Specific Information:
NIDCD will only accept applications in support of new faculty recruits who are conducting basic, clinical or epidemiological research in the communication sciences of hearing, balance, language, speech, voice, smell and taste.

Eligibility:
NIDCD will accept only one application from each separate organizational component of a University (e.g., one application each from the medical school, dental school, or school of public health).

Budget and Project Period: 
NIDCD will allow the support of more than one new faculty recruit within the same organizational component of a University (e.g., the medical or dental school) but the total requested amount can not exceed $500,000 (total of salary and other start-up costs) per year, for a maximum of $1,000,000 direct costs over a two-year project period.

Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards:
NIDCD expects to make between 4 and 7 awards during FY 2009, with total funding of approximately $10 million over the two-year period of FY 2009 and 2010.

Other Information: 
NIDCD requires that any faculty members hired under this initiative receive joint appointment(s) with other academic unit(s) and/or department at the applicant institution, allowing new faculty to access University-wide research resources and core facilities, and to serve as mentors for graduate programs affiliated with other academic unit(s).

Commitment of institutional resources and continuity of support is expected after the expiration of the award. Highest program priority will be given to applications that commit at least four additional years of salary support and research resources after the end of the award.
