On August 10, 2006, Director Harley G. Lappin named RADM Newton E. Kendig as Assistant Director of the Health Services Division (HSD). RADM Kendig will now serve as both Medical Director and HSD Assistant Director for the Bureau.

Dr. Kendig is a 1984, fifth generation graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital, in 1987, and sub-specialty training in infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins University in 1991, where he subsequently accepted a faculty appointment. Dr. Kendig then served as Medical Director of the Maryland Department of Corrections and Public Safety for five years.

A commissioned United States Public Health Service (USPHS) officer, he joined the Bureau in 1996 as Chief of Infectious Diseases under then-Assistant Director RADM Kenneth P. Moritsugu. In 1999, Bureau Director Kathleen Hawk Sawyer appointed Dr. Kendig as Medical Director of the BOP, and he has served in this capacity from 1999 through the present. RADM Kendig is the recipient of multiple USPHS awards, including the Meritorious Service, Outstanding Service, and Commendation medals. He remains a part-time faculty member in infectious diseases with Johns Hopkins University.
