U.S. Department of Labor announces grant exceeding $5 million to Kentucky to aid in recovery from winter storm
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $5,231,200 grant to the commonwealth of Kentucky to create approximately 503 temporary jobs related to cleanup after a severe winter storm.
"Today's grant will provide temporary jobs to assist in the necessary cleanup resulting from the severe winter storm that affected Kentucky communities," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.
The Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, Department for Workforce Investment, will receive the grant, which will provide temporary employment for the cleanup, demolition, repair, renovation and reconstruction of destroyed public structures, facilities and land within affected communities. Additionally, funds may be used to perform work on the homes of economically disadvantaged individuals who are eligible for the federally funded weatherization program, with priority service given to the elderly and individuals with disabilities. Funds also will be used to provide core, intensive and retraining services for individuals selected for these temporary jobs who cannot return to work.
The grant will serve 93 Kentucky counties declared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as eligible for FEMA's Public Assistance Program.
Of the $5,231,200 announced today, $1,745,000 will be released initially. The balance will be released as the state demonstrates a continued need for disaster assistance.
