Arlington youth coach arrested on child pornography charges

Alexandria, VA - Charles Rust-Tierney, age 51, of Arlington, Virginia, was arrested today, and a criminal complaint was filed against him charging him with receipt and possession of child pornography in violation of federal law. The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia; U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); and, the Arlington County Police Department made the announcement after his initial appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Barry R. Poretz.

According to court documents and court proceedings today, Rust-Tierney's residence was searched pursuant to a search warrant today by ICE and the Arlington County Police Department. Rust-Tierney was taken into custody and had his initial appearance in United States District Court.

Court documents reveal that Rust-Tierney coaches various youth sport teams in and around Arlington County. He is currently being detained pending a preliminary hearing and detention hearing to be held on February 28.

The public is urged to report suspected child predators and any suspicious activity to ICE through its toll-free hotline at 1-866-DHS-2ICE. In addition, the Arlington County Police may be contacted at 703-228-4242 with information pertaining to this investigation.

The investigation was conducted by ICE, with the assistance of the Arlington County Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Gerald Smagala and Special Assistant United States Attorney Edward McAndrew, of the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, U.S. Department of Justice, are prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.

Criminal complaints are only charges and not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty.
