II. Implementation Team Meetings

Numerous meetings between OLA and OSHA were held prior to the signing of the Alliance. On February 2, 2004, talked with S. Munley regarding presentations on the OLA Expo, March 8th talked with S. Munley on possibility of upcoming session for hands on training for workers. This did not materialize due to the extremely busy spring and summer seasons for landscapers. The session was postponed until November 2004. CAS visited OLA and provided landscaping brochure to hand out to members.

III. Activities and Products

Evaluation Period.

This report covers one year’s worth of activities, from October 15, 2003-October 15, 2004

Alliance Activity:
  • Training and Education

CAS provided training at OLA’s expo conference in Feb. 2004, where over 1,500 people attended. The focus for those sessions was on written safety and health programs and recent fatalities/accidents. Two photos included.

  • Outreach and Communication

OLA has placed a link to the OSHA website on their website, thereby encouraging visitors to become involved in the safety and health process.

  • Promoting the National Dialogue on Safety and Health

During the course of the past year, OLA has promoted the Alliance and safety and health in general during their internal meetings as well as conferences held with other organizations.
Alliance Products.
  • Training and Education

OSHA developed and provided OLA with tri-fold brochures on “The Worker’s Guide to Safety.” This brochure details typical hazards that employees are exposed to, employee responsibilities and rights and summaries of accidents and fatalities that have recently occurred in the industry. Also developed in Spanish. Document attached.

  • Outreach and Communication (same as above)

  • Promoting the National Dialogue on Safety and Health (same as above)
IV. Results

This first year of the Alliance has been productive from a number of standpoints. OSHA has opened the door to communicating with an industry that historically hasn’t seen very much interaction with safety and health. There have been positive responses from the OLA members regarding the helpfulness of the monthly articles in the “Growing Concern” publication as well as opening the lines of communication during their annual conference and expo.

Type of Activity (Conference, Training, Print and Electronic Distribution, etc.) Number of Individuals Reached or Trained
Expo and Conference 1,500
Trifold Brochure 150
Monthly Association Article 500
TOTAL 2,150

V. Upcoming Milestones

On November 18, the Cleveland OSHA office will be participating in OLA’s annual meeting which will be based almost entirely on safety and health issues. The group will be divided into two separate sections, one for owners/managers and the other for foremen/laborers. One will be focused on written safety and health programs and the other will be a hands on session with training given by OSHA on typical types of landscaping machinery and other hazards found in the industry.

On February 16 and 17, 2005, their annual expo and conference will be in Cleveland where CAS, Julie Weis will participate, speak, and have an OSHA booth set up with applicable handouts for attendees. In 2004, there were approximately 1,500 individuals who attended this professional landscape products show.

We will continue to provide monthly articles to OLA’s “Growing Concern” publication that include a variety of safety and health topics.

We anticipate a renewal of this Alliance that is set to conclude in April 2005.
