The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Institute of
Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Institute of Organizational Security
and Technology (IOST) of the Florida Community College of Jacksonville (FCCJ)
formed an alliance establishing a collaborative relationship to foster safer and
more healthful American workplaces. The formation of the Alliance was to provide
the Florida Community College at Jacksonville students and business partnerships
with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them
protect employees’ health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing
exposure to prevalent workplace hazards in the shipbuilding and repair,
landscaping and horticultural services industries.
The annual status report for the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health
Alliance initiated by the OSHA Area Office in Jacksonville, Florida, is
on-going. The milestones and accomplishments achieved through this Alliance are
listed below:
Milestones met from January 9, 2004 through January 8, 2005.
Florida Community College at Jacksonville’s Institute of Occupational Safety and
Health Alliance was signed on January 9, 2004.
Working together to develop training and education programs focusing on Weapons
of Mass Destruction (WMD) for employers and employees in both the public and
private sectors:

The Military Education Institute of the Florida Community
College at Jacksonville (MEI) developed a presentation designed to provide
Threat Response to WMD for building Administrative professionals.

The MEI presented a Threats Response to WMD to the
International Facility Manager’s Association (IFMA) on 11 August 2004 to
twenty attendees.

The MEI presented the Threats Response to WMD to the
Orlando, Florida Chapter of the IFMA on 20 October 2004 to forty attendees.
Working together to develop training and education
programs focusing on effectively addressing safety hazards in landscaping and
horticultural services industries:

Training was given on Landscape Safety Programs on June
16, 2004 during a 6-hour Landscape Hazard Awareness training session dealing
with chainsaws, skid steers, mowers, tree trimming, Hand and Power Tools.

Development of a "Grass Talk" hand-out pamphlet on
Landscape Safety.

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has
trained three Instructors on Landscape Safety through programs developed by
Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas and the Susan Harwood Grant.
Working together to raise the awareness of workplace
safety and health for FCCJ staff personnel:

Jointly discussed the Alliance and the importance of
cooperative programs and provided OSHA safety News during the IOSH Advisory
Board meeting.

Published information on the Alliance in the January 2004
OSHA Region IV e-newsletter.

IOSH provides to the community college the following staff
safety training programs:

Hazards Communication

Hazardous Materials and Waste Generation/Operations

FCCJ has provided a link to the OSHA web page on their
IOSH web site.
Other:
- The Advisory Board for the IOSH has invited the Jacksonville Area Office
to participate by providing input to the Environmental Science Training
programs. A total of 62 students are currently enrolled in the Environmental,
Hazardous Waste and Safety Compliance program through the IOSH in their first
year. In the Environmental, Hazardous Waste and Occupational Safety degree
program, course work is dedicated to occupational safety and health.
- Advisory Board meetings were held on January 22, 2004, June 3, 2004,
September 23, 2004, and December 14, 2004. The next advisory board meeting is
scheduled for March 2, 2005.
- Tri-annual meetings for the Alliance were held April 15, 2004, August 11,
2004, and December 7, 2004.
Upcoming Milestones:
- The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health will continue to work with
and participate in the distribution of the OSHA Region IV Landscape “Grass
Talk” pamphlets when they are published.
