I. Alliance Background: Mobile County School System, American Society of Safety Engineers, Mobile United and Safe State Consultation Program Alliance to provide MCPSS, Mobile United employees and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources in order to help protect employees’ health and safety, in particular youth workers, by addressing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), workplace violence, bloodborne pathogens, falls, chemical exposure, machine guarding, electrical, material handling hazards. Date Signed: March 16, 2004 Overview: This alliance was formed between the participating agencies and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with the purpose of promoting safe and healthful working conditions for youth workers in the Mobile Area. Implementation Team Membership: Representatives from OSHA, Mobile County Public Schools, ASSE - Mobile Chapter, Safe State, and Mobile United. Contributors: Same as above. Evaluation Period: March 16, 2004, through March 16, 2005 II. Implementation Team Meetings: July 26, 2004; September 10, 2004, October 22, 2004; December 21, 2004; and February 11, 2005. III. Events and Products Training and Education Alliance members developed an OSHA 10-hr general industry courses, on safety and health issues for Youth Workers at MCPSS. December 3 and 17, 2004, Alliance members provided OSHA 10-hr training at two local Career/Technical Schools in Mobile. Over 156 students from Faulkner and 77 from Bryant have completed the course with a potential savings in the area of $80,000 in cost avoidance by providing these classes. Outreach and Communication Safe State Consultation Program joins the Alliance July 30, 2004. Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health This Alliance was signed during the opening ceremony of the Central Gulf Coast Safety & Health Seminar and Exposition (EXPO). Participants in the signing included OSHA, ASSE – Mobile Chapter, Mobile United and Mobile County Public Schools. The EXPO was held at the Mobile Convention Center and is now in its 14th year of operation. The EXPO was recognized with OSHA’s National Small Business Outreach Award in 2000, for its efforts in bringing about safety and health knowledge to the small business community. This activity raised the awareness of youth worker occupational safety and health concerns throughout Mobile and surrounding communities. IV. Results Refer to the Training and Education events above V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2005 Alliance members to complete OSHA 10 Hour General Industry training to all youth at enrolled at Mobile Career/Technical Schools. Alliance members to co-ordinate OSHA 501 (train-the-trainer) course to qualified teachers at Mobile Career/Technical Schools.
