President Signs Omnibus Appropriation Bill

January 8, 2008

NSF is funded at $6.065 billion for the 2008 fiscal year that began on Oct.1, 2007, and ends on Sept. 30, 2008. The funds are provided in the $473.5-billion Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008 (H.R. 2764). The measure consolidates 11 of the 12 regular appropriations bills that fund the federal government each year. (In November, Congress passed and the President signed into law the FY 2008 Department of Defense appropriations bill.)

Until President Bush signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act into law on Dec. 26, 2007, NSF was funded by a series of continuing resolutions.

For the current fiscal year, NSF's Research and Related Activities (RRA) account is funded at $4.8 billion, an increase of $56 million over the FY 2007 funding level. The Major Research Equipment and Facilities Construction (MREFC) account received $220.7 million. The Education and Human Resources (EHR) account received $725.6 million. The Agency Operations and Award Management (AOAM) account received $281.7 million. The Office of the National Science Board (NSB) account received $3.9 million. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) account received $11.4 million.

The President is scheduled to send his FY 2009 budget request to Congress on Feb. 4, 2008.
