In December 1967, VISTA member Judy Barkin, on a home visit to San Francisco, sold several hundred dollars worth of Apache beadwork. Assigned to the Fort Apache reservation in Arizona, Barkin returned with an additional $400 worth of orders and helped the woman start a beadwork business. The extra dollars were a boon to many families who lived below the national poverty level.
