GDP by state data files selected for downloading from the GDP by state Interactive Table web page are either in comma quote delimited format, or large data files in a compressed format that must be expanded once downloaded.

Additional Information:

Industry detail for the years 1987-97 is based on the 1977 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). Industry detail for the years 1963-86 is based on the 1972 SIC.

Current dollar GDP by state is presented in millions of dollars.

Real GDP by state is presented in millions of chained (2000) dollars.

Chained (2000) dollar series are calculated as the product of the chain-type quantity index and the 2000 current-dollar value of the corresponding series, divided by 100. Because the formula for the chain-type quantity indexes uses weights of more than one period, the corresponding chained-dollar estimates are usually not additive.

The following estimates are available on the BEA website:

• Total gross domestic product by state in nominal and chained (2000) dollars and quantity indexes for NAICS industry sectors for 1997-2007
• Total gross domestic product by state in nominal and chained (2000) dollars and quantity indexes for 81 NAICS industries for 1997-2006
• Total gross domestic product by state in nominal and chained (2000) dollars, compensation of employees, taxes on production and imports (TOPI), gross operating surplus (GOS), and quantity indexes for 81 NAICS industries for 2001-2006
• Total gross domestic product by state, compensation of employees, taxes on production and imports (TOPI), gross operating surplus (GOS), and quantity indexes for 75 SIC industries for 1963-1997
• Total gross domestic product by state in chained (2000) dollars for 75 SIC industries for 1990-1997

BEA will release revised and new estimates in June 2009.
