The interpretive center highlights the natural and cultural history of the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. Exhibits feature the geology, flora, and fauna of the Monument; Chief Joseph’s surrender rifle; and artifacts from the steamboat Far West.

The center is located in the historic town of Fort Benton, approximately 40 miles northeast of Great Falls, Montana.

Activities: The center is situated on the banks of the Missouri River. An interpretive trail on the center's grounds connects to the levee walk trail that extends the length of Fort Benton. Tours of the center are self-guided, but tours and programs for groups are available upon request.

Facilities:  The center and interpretive trail is fully accessible. Two picnic tables are located on the grounds, and restrooms and water fountains are available inside the center. Information for those floating the Wild and Scenic Upper Missouri River is available in the lobby. The classroom displays Karl Bodmer lithographs from his sketches on the Missouri in 1833, a 3-D map of the Upper Missouri River and surrounding landscape, and a short interpretive film about the Monument. The interpretive hall describes geology; natural history of the uplands and river; the steamboat era; the freighting and commerce that resulted in Fort Benton becoming the “worlds innermost port;” and the various cultures and people that settled in the area. Most of the exhibits are hands-on, something for the child in everyone!

Location:  The center is located at 701 7th Street, Fort Benton, Montana. From the south (Great Falls) and Hwy 87 turn right into Fort Benton. Continue down hill to 13th Street, turn left. Follow 13th Street to Front Street, turn right. Continue on Front Street to 7th Street, turn left. From the north (Havre) turn left into Fort Benton, then follow directions per above. From the east (Geraldine/Lewistown) and Hwy 80, continue into Fort Benton. Cross the bridge over the Missouri River, immediately turn left on Front Street after crossing the bridge. Follow Front Street to 7th Street, turn left.

Fees: A $2 amenity fee is charged to view the interpretive center. The lobby, restrooms, interpretive trail, and picnic areas are available for free. The center also sells an area pass that will include admission to all Fort Benton museums, the Old Fort, and the interpretive center for one fee. The area pass costs $10 per person (less for children) and will be valid for two days.
