Title: The 2009 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Workshop on Innovative Approaches for Detecting Microorganisms and Cyanotoxins in Water
Date: May 20-21, 2009
Location: Shenandoah Room, #104
EPA Region 3 Offices
1650 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA
Contact: Barbara Klieforth (klieforth.barbara@epa.gov)
202-343-9266
Purpose: This workshop is intended to facilitate progress on the quantitative assessment of microbial agents in water and brings scientists together with policy-makers. Success at EPA is dependent, in large part, on its ability to make credible environmental decisions based on solid scientific information and technical methodologies. Reliable, sensitive, robust, and versatile detection and monitoring tools are needed to address the risk assessment and management of known and emerging microbial contaminants in source water, treated water, and/or in distribution systems. EPA invites one and all to collaborate on furthering the development of cost-effective, timely and innovative technology solutions in assessing and managing environmental risks to human health.

Workshop Objectives

  • Provide a forum to discuss proposed solutions to the methodological challenges in the search for better methods of detection and assessment of waterborne microbial contaminants.
  • Facilitate collaboration and cooperation among scientists and
  • policy-makers from research entities, EPA, States, local agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist EPA in identifying what research or technologies are needed to better inform decisions and/or policies associated with the assessment of microorganisms in water.
  • Give STAR grantees of the past two solicitations regarding "Development and Evaluation of Innovative Approaches for the Quantitative Assessment of Pathogens and Cyanobacteria and Their Toxins in Drinking Water” a chance to present their latest findings.

Abstracts of the grantees' projects can be found at: http://www.epa.gov/ncer/rfa/2005/2005_pathogens_drinking_water.html

Title: The Plight of Ecosystems in a Changing Climate: Impacts on Services, Interactions and Responses Workshop
Date: May 27-28, 2009
Location: Plymouth Church (Across from the EPA Region 10 Office)

Purpose: EPA’s National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) and EPA Region 10 are partnering to hold a three-tiered meeting to share information about grant research on the ecosystem impacts of climate change. The grants are supported by EPA’s Global Change Research Program.
  1. Tier one will review the results of five global ecosystem grants that investigated the effects of climate change and other stressors on coral reef and tidal marsh structure and function as well as the consequences for the flow of ecosystem services provided by these systems.
  2. Tier two will review the progress of seven global ecosystem grants that seek to understand how and when nonlinear ecological changes, in response to climate change and variability, affect ecological systems and their associated services. The grants focus on linked terrestrial and aquatic systems. The Department of Energy and EPA were partners in soliciting these grants.
  3. Tier three will serve as the kickoff meeting for six new global ecosystem grants that will study the synergistic effects of climate change, land use, and invasive species and explore possible management scenarios surrounding these issues. The solicitation for these grants was advertised in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The meeting is open to the public.
